Before you begin: You may need an adult or guardian’s assistance with using a printer.
- (2) 1x Wide, 1×1 Offset Corner Connectors
- (2) 3×5 “L” pieces
- (2) 2×8 pieces
- (2) 2×16 pieces
- (3) 4×16 pieces
- 31 connector pins
- Additive pieces for decoration
- Printer Paper
Select a special photo of you and Mom and print it off (with an adult’s assistance if needed). In our demo we used a 5×7 sized photo. Feel free to use whichever size you like, however you may need more or less VEX IQ pieces to complete the frame, depending upon the size of your photo.
Lay three 4×16 panels on the table, side by side, vertically so they create a large square-like surface. This will become the back of your picture frame.
Find your two 2×16 pieces (we used purple). Lay one piece on the left and right of your square-like surface so that the edges of the purple pieces align with the edges of the white. These are the vertical sidings of your photo frame. Starting in hole one, push a connector pin through, securing the siding to the back of the frame. Stick a connector pin through every other hole in on the outer edge of your 2×16 piece. Be mindful just do place the pins in the outer edge of your frame so the photo can gently slide in.
Once you have both the left and right sidings of your frame securely in place, take one 2×8 piece and snap in onto the bottom of the frame, so that the purple edge aligns with the white backing. We used six pins to fasten this plate in place. Three in the bottom left corner, and three in the bottom right. At this point you have three sidings of your picture frame in place. The frame itself should be secure enough for you to slide your photo in through the opening on at the top.
Close the top of your photo frame by securing the second 2×8 piece in place, aligning the purple outer edge with the white outer edge. Again, use six pins in the outer rim of the frame. The front of your gift is now complete, you’re almost done!
Flip your picture frame over, face-down. We now have to construct the stand element. Take your two 3×5 “L” pieces and fasten them together with a connector pin so that the top of the “L” shape is fastened to the bottom of the secondary “L” shape. Using connector pins, fasten an Offset Corner Connector to each open end of the “L” shaped pieces. Make sure both of your Offset Corner Connectors are on the same side of the stand, it will help your photo stand more evenly. Secure both Offset Corner Connectors into the back, bottom-middle panel of your picture frame. You may want to adjust the stand to accommodate your frame best.
Your frame should now stand on it’s own! Use any spare pieces you have to customize your photo frame. We added a sun and spring flowers to the version below!
