Building your favorite giant VEX Robotics HEXBUG in one sitting can be challenging when life is so hectic! Whether you’re stopping mid-way through to watch your favorite television show, giving your fingers a rest, or visiting a relative in another state – there’s no suitable way to pack and transport your robot pieces in a jiffy, until now. Introducing our newest DIY project, the HEXBUG Carry-N-Go Kit. Made from a household object everyone has out stashed in their closet or garage, a tackle box! Restore an old box (with permission of course) or buy a new one for a cost efficient, personalized, solution to storing and traveling with your VEX Robotics by HEXBUG kits.
This project should only take a few hours but it really depends how detailed you want your kit to be! It’s all about executing your unique vision. On average, we at HEXBUG guestimate that this venture should take no more than two hours (excluding any dry time for the painted portions of your box).
- Tackle box, we used the “Flambeau 2-Tray Classic Tackle Box” ($9.96, Walmart)
- Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover Aerosol Paint 12 Ounces – ($3.86, Walmart)
- Apple Barrel 2 oz. Paints – ($0.50, Walmart)
- Paint-safe clothes or smock
- Safety goggles
Make sure to wear paint-safe clothes and safety goggles. Lay newspaper out on a flat, even, surface and place your tackle box on top. Double check that your box is free of all labels and stickers, this way the paint you’re about to apply will cover evenly.
Separate the top of your tackle box from the bottom. This is usually achieved by unlatching the back hinges of the box.
Once the two portions of your kit are separate, select your spray paint. Stand 2-3 feet away from your box while applying paint (and be sure to ask your parents for help with this part if you need it). Lay 1-2 layers of paint on both the inside and outside of the box.
After your kit has dried, begin your decoration process! Use stickers, markers, stencils, glitter, pipe cleaners, rhinestones, etc. to customize your DIY HEXBUG Carry-N-Go Kit! Take a photo of your finished product and Instagram it using the hashtag #HEXDIY. In future weeks we’ll be featuring the most creative designs on our social media channels!
PS – this traveling case can also double as a terrific storage bin for your sprawling nano collection.
