We all think of HEXBUGs as friendly little creatures that skitter around independent of one another, doing their own thing. What if there was a breed of HEXBUGs that weren’t friends? What if there was a breed of HEXBUGs that were designed for battle? That is the challenge we set out to answer with this product design. We chose the spider because it has the look and feel that echoes our love for futuristic sci-fi movies, plus it is nimble and wouldn't get tangled up when coming into contact with another spider. The first thing we did was to add mean looking sci-fi guns with a laser-like red LED inside. In order to make the guns feel truly realistic we needed laser sounds, so we put a speaker in the spider. Now, when the fire button is pressed on the remote, the battle spider attacks with a laser-looking LED beam, laser sounds, and recoil motion as the gun shoots. But how do we know if a battle spider is hit? We send an invisible beam of IR light out from the gun. Each spider reacts to hits from any direction using a 360 degree hit sensor, which required positioning a conical mirror on the spider’s head -- cool right? We added another LED in the spiders head so you can see when it's hit, using light refractors to make it really light up. Borrowing from the HEXBUG Warriors, the spider keeps track of each hit, and after enough hits, it powers down in utter defeat. Realistic battle experience achieved! Finally, we spent some time designing a unique battle hardened paint job for the product and the packaging -- completing the revamped look and feel of the all-new Battle Spider. Here are some of the key steps and supporting images that document the development of the HEXBUG Battle Spider. Enjoy!
